Maia Wojciechowska (1927-2002)

Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1927. Like many of her fellow countrymen she left during the Second World War when the Nazis invaded. Settled in America where she has worked in a variety of jobs, including in newspapers and PR, as a private detective, a translator, and a professional tennis player and coach. In her author persona, she has written 19 books, mainly for children but also a couple of adult novels. She has also written under her married name, Maia Rodman. As far as I know wrote only one horse story, about a horse based on one she owned herself.

She won the Newbery Medal in 1965 for her book
Shadow of a Bull, which is her best known and most widely published work by far.
